This community takes in detoxicated adults over the age of 18.
Length of treatment: A year in the village and six months in a hostel in Afula,
Haifa or Herzlia.
The Aim of the treatment: To cause a change in the addict's lifestyle by means
of processes of re-socialization to a drug-free lifestyle and integration in society.
The method of treatment in the community is mainly anchored in a socio-psychological
approach to the explanation of the phenomenon of addiction. This approach considers
addiction as stemming from problems of maladjustment (psychological and other), and
maintains that intensive therapeutic techniques within the

framework of the community are capable of revitalizing the character,
personality and identity of the drug addict
to the point that he/she will not need to use drugs. Complete recovery means not only
to remain drug-free, but also to live a satisfying, productive and meaningful life.
The therapeutic treatment in the community has four dimensions:
1. The behavioral dimension
This is dealt with through the daily routine. The residents are obliged to keep the rules
and take responsibility for their actions. They reflect their state to their friends and
to themselves and get help from the various therapeutic treatments available in the
community. As time passes and they progress from one stage to the next, they are expected
to internalize new patterns of behavior.
2. The psychosocial dimension
The focus is on increased self-awareness and the forging of a positive self-image. Each
resident has a therapist (a social worker or clinical psychologist), who treats him/her
both individually and in a group throughout his/her stay in the community. Family therapy
is carried out by a social worker with specific training in this sphere.
3. The rehabilitation dimension
The residents acquire appropriate tools in preparation for their return to normative
society. They participate in courses, trips and challenging activities, in order to learn
how to spend leisure time in a new and beneficial way. Before leaving the community they
also acquire practical tools by participating in a preparatory technological course.
They receive vocational training by means of a course in laying tiles and preparation for
productive work within the framework of various jobs within the community. At the final
stages of their treatment they may go out to work in the neighboring kibbutzim.
4. The medical dimension
In Malkishua there is a clinic, providing services to the residents. The staff comprises
a nurse, a doctor and a psychiatrist. There is also a dental clinic. If the need arises,
the residents are referred to specialists in outpatient clinics of the HMOs.
